Kari Nellikka/Nellikka Karupichathu/Black Gooseberry bottled and ready to use on the 10 th day.

Making the Karinellika(Karupicha Nellikka/Black Gooseberry

Nellikka Karupichathu or Black Gooseberry is a delicious pickle which my mom used to make often and is one of my favorites. She used to make a pickle and chutney with it which was my favorite to go with rice or Kanji.

It would take around 10 days for the Nellikka to get this black color.Apart from other pickles, bird’s eye chills(Kanthari mulaku) is used instead of red chilly powder for a spicy flavor. Asafoetida powder is used for a unique taste . It is also known for it’s long shelf life.

Repeat this twice a day-in the morning and evening for the next 8-10 days.Every time make sure to tilt the clay pot -so that it’s ingredients could get a good shuffle in it-before heating it on medium flame.
