Chowchow Parippu curry .

1.Masoor/Toor Dal-1/2 cup
Chowchow/chayote-1
Onion-1
Garlic-2
Ginger-1/2” piece
Turmeric powder-1/4 tsp
Chilli powder-1/2 tsp
Wash the dal and soak for 10-15 minutes and drain.
Peel the chowchow and remove the seed.Cut into small pieces and add to the Dal.Then pressure cook this for a whistle adding enough water (water should be an inch above the dal) and all the above remaining ingredients.
I cooked it in a vessel,as my family doesn’t like the over cooked/mushy Dal .
2.Tomato-1/2 big
Salt to taste
Add in the chopped tomato and salt and cook until tomato blends.
3.Coconut grated-1/4 cup
Cumin seeds-1/4 tsp
Whole pepper-6-8
Grind this together to a smooth paste adding some water .Add this to the cooked Dal mix and cook for few minutes.
4.Mustard seeds-3/4 tsp
Shallots-3
Dry Red Chilli-2
Curry leaves-2 sprigs
Coconut oil-1 1/2 tbsp.
Heat oil in a kadai and splutter the mustard seeds & then broken red chilies and curry leaves.Then
add the chopped shallots, and cook till golden.Pour this into the Dal mixture and stir in.
Chowchow Parippu Curry is ready to serve with some hot rice or chappathis.
