Beef Chatti Curry (with Baked Potatoes 🥔)

Beef Chatti Curry is a slow cook recipe that takes around 50 minutes on medium fires and it’s cooked in a Chatti (earthen pots) which gives the curry it’s taste.

The recipe has two main steps-one to slow cook the beef and two to roast the potatoes and finally it’s cooked together.The roasted/baked potatoes adds to the taste of the curry .Moreover cooking this in coconut oil adds more flavor to the dish.

Beef Chatti Curry (with baked potatoes )

1.Beef-1/2 kg

Cut the beef into small pieces and wash and drain.

2.Coconut Oil-2 tbsps

Onions-2 big

Garlic -4-5 big(Chinese ones)

Ginger-1” piece

Curry leaves-2 -3 sprigs

Heat oil and sauté the chopped ginger,garlic,onions and one sprig curry leaves till onions start to brown.

2.Kashmiri Chilli powder-1 1/2 tsp

Chilli powder -1 1/2 tsp

Turmeric powder-1/2 tsp

Add the above masalas and cook on low heat till raw smell vanishes.

3.Meat Masala-1 tbsp

Coriander powder-1 tbsp

Salt to taste

Now add the above masalas and sauté for few minutes.Now add the set aside beef and some salt and cover and cook for 15 minutes without adding any water.

4.Hot water-2 cups

Tomato-1 (medium size)

Green Chillies-4-5

Pepper powder-1 1/2 tsp

Garam Masala -1 tsp

After 20 minutes all the water from the beef will be absorbed and a thick gravy will be formed.Add the 2 cups of hot water and continue to cover and cook the meat till done.Add the chopped tomato ,the remaining curry leaves,green chillies ,pepper powder and garam masala and continue to cook until a thin gravy is formed.

5. Potato-2 big(3 small)

Turmeric powder-1/4 tsp

Pepper powder-1/2 tsp

Chilli powder-1/2 tsp

Salt to taste

Coconut oil-1 tsp

Clean the potatoes and cut into chunks .Parboil the potatoes in salted water and drain.Add all the above masalas and oil and marinate the potatoes and bake it in oven for 15-20 minutes or lightly browned and crispy . I used my Tefal Actifry and baked for 10 minutes.

Or you can roast this in a nonstick pan by adding 2 tbsps of oil and often turning till lightly browned.

Once the beef is well cooked add the baked potatoes and allow it to cook on low heat for 2-3 minutes.Remove this and set aside.

6.For Tempering

Coconut oil-1 tbsp

Coconut slices-1/4 cup

Turmeric powder-a pinch

Dry Red Chillies-2

Curry leaves-1 sprig

Heat oil in a small pan and sauté the coconut slices ,red chillies and turmeric powder,till coconut starts to brown lightly .Add the curry leaves and off the stove.Pour this over the Beef Chatti Curry.
